Dangerous Decibels

Yesterday we had Julie in to talk to us about hearing and decibels. We learnt all about our ears and what they are made of (outer, middle and inner) and the safe level of decibels for hearing, which is 85db. Normal conversation is usually at 70-80 decibels, tractors and motorbikes were at 110 decibels.

Our first experiment was to see how vibrations caused movement, this was to understand how vibrations send messages to our brains about what we are hearing. We used tuning forks and ping pong balls to see how vibrations work.

Next we learnt about the 18,000 hairs we have that help us feel the vibrations. We experimented with pipe cleaners and moved our hands across them to replicate how the vibrations affect the hairs. When we hear loud noises the vibrations are faster and this can cause damage.

Lastly we learnt about the strategies we can use to protect our ears and hearing; walk away, protect your ears, turn it down.

Camp Day Fun

Yesterday we had camp day for Years 1-4 in the Rawhiti Domain. We had to look for clues to get to the next place. We lined up in our team letters and we had to stay in our groups and stick together. We made human pyramids, some people kept falling off! It was really fun. Some of us also made nests using pine needles and pine cones. The part Khorvez liked the best was sliding down the hill. Isa liked making straw men laying eggs inside the nest. We went on walks with our groups. Lucas’ group had a running race. Brenna liked playing with her friends on the playground.

Next time we would love to walk to New Brighton beach or the whale pool. Scout would like to do a band performance. Kiara would like an ice cream in New Brighton. Isa thinks it would be cool to swim. Despina would like more tents and to have a tug of war. Brenna thinks we could try and walk to QEII and have a swim. Khorvez would like camp day to be at Flip Out. Mitchell would like to go hiking with the whole school in the mountains or the Port Hills.

Duffy!

Today we were lucky to be able to receive our Duffy books, Duffy books in homes aim to inspire a love of books in children so that they become adults who inspire a love of reading. We had our Duffy role model assembly where we listened in to our role model Denzel Laumatia who found his love for books at a young age after his teacher led him to read about his interests in sports! This led him to find his passion through bodybuilding and academics. We learnt that we too can follow our passions, the world is our oyster!

Check out the photos of us enjoying our 2 new books that we were lucky enough to choose!
